Portishead meetings

Writing and reading groups in Portishead

Join a friendly monthly Writers’ Group or Bring Your Own Book session at Portishead Library. Both groups are free, relaxed and easy to join.

Regular meetings

Two different groups, each meeting once a month

Come to write and stay accountable, or bring a book and enjoy a proper conversation about reading.

Second Tuesday 2–4 pm

Writers’ Group

A relaxed monthly meeting for writing, encouragement, sharing ideas and keeping your work moving.

There’s no pressure to read aloud or present polished work. Bring something to write with and use the session to make progress alongside other writers.

Third Friday 10.30 am–12.30 pm

Bring Your Own Book

Bring whatever you’re reading. There’s no selected title, no homework and no requirement to finish a book before the meeting.

Fiction, non-fiction, essays, poetry, enormous classics, niche curiosities, Haynes manuals and train timetables are all fair game.

What to expect

Friendly, low-pressure and useful

You don’t need to be published, polished or particularly confident. The groups are intended to be welcoming places where writers and readers can meet without having to perform.

No pressure to read aloud
You can talk about what you’ve been working on, listen to other people or simply use the time to write.
Thoughtful feedback, not rushed reactions
When writers want feedback, it can be arranged outside the meeting so that readers have time to consider the work properly.
No prescribed reading
Bring Your Own Book welcomes whatever you’ve chosen to read, rather than giving everyone the same title.
